Day 5 Feb 13, 2024

Our free day started even brighter. The rain clouds were gone! Our goal was to visit Plitvice Lakes, a Croatian National Park. On the way was a stop at Nikola Tesla Experience in Karlovac. This was a nice little museum that highlighted his education and personal history. Croatia is proud to claim one of the world’s most important scientists as their own.

A small Google map detour aside, we arrived at Plitvice a little after noon, and it was practically empty. The geography was unlike anything we’d ever seen. The series of lakes cascaded down a canyon where they joined with another river that featured an 87 meter waterfall on the way to the Black Sea. The largest lake had an electric boat ride from one side to the other that took twenty minutes around an island. The upper lakes were not open during the off season. The lakes were connected by tufa cascade waterfalls with some vegetation. All were lined by a boardwalk along the shore and across the cascading waterfalls. God’s beautiful creation on display!

Dinner was larger than expected. Ja had artisan pizza with prosciutto and sour cream. Scott had a mound of various pork meats on a mountain of sauerkraut. They’ll make good breakfasts in the morning. If anyone would like to join us next year, we’d love to take you.
